Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) was founded in 1922 and has more than 100,000 active members and 600 chapters at institutions of higher education and healthcare partners around the world. Sigma is an international community of nurses, dedicated to the advancement of knowledge, teaching, learning, and service through the cultivation of communities of practice, education, and research.
The University of Pittsburgh's School of Nursing, Eta Chapter, is the sixth chapter of Sigma established in 1947. To become a member of Sigma Theta Tau is an honor.
Membership applications are available in the Student Affairs & Alumni Relations Office in mid-November, and need to be returned completed by mid-January. A membership committee reviews each application, and students are invited to become members if they have demonstrated sufficient academic achievement, leadership, and commitment to advancing the profession of nursing.
Eligible students include:
- Juniors and Seniors in the Baccalaureate curriculum
- RN Options students who have completed at least 12 credits at Pitt in the School of Nursing
- Graduate students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above
