LtCol. Charles Giordano
DNP, CRNA

Nurse Anesthesia
Profile
Dr. Giordano received his BSN ’99, MSN ’06, DNP’19 all from the University of Pittsburgh. After nursing school LtCol. Giordano spent 4 years on active duty in the USAF as a Trauma ICU nurse at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio before heading back to Pitt for Anesthesia School. Upon successful completion of anesthesia training LtCol. Giordano remained in the USAF Reserves as a CRNA attached to the San Antonio Military Medical Center along with fulltime employment with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Chuck was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the Summer of 2010 to a Forward Surgical Team on a remote island in the Philippines as the sole anesthesia provider for Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines. LtCol Giordano has remained in USAF Reserves and now is attached to the 911th Air Wing, Pittsburgh PA as a member of their Critical Care Air Transport Team and as the Officer in Charge of Education and Training. Chuck frequently lectures on the local, state, and national levels in the areas of obstetrical anesthesia, quality improvement initiatives and leadership training.
Clinical Emphasis
LtCol. Giordano has worked in a variety of environments in the obstetrical sphere including both independent practice and ACT models. His primary area of practice currently is obstetric anesthesia, and his current clinical affiliation site is Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC.
Scholarly Emphasis
Dr. Giordano’s scholarly emphasis will be on obstetric anesthesia protocols and outcomes, enhancement of student preparation for obstetric anesthesia, development of regional anesthesia knowledge and skill through translation of simulation to practice and the development of ultrasound curriculum for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
Teaching
Dr. Giordano has joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nurse Anesthesia Program and works as a member of the didactic faculty while maintaining his role as a didactic and clinical instructor of OB anesthesia. Dr. Giordano will be teaching across the curriculum with a focus on regional anesthesia, obstetric anesthesia, point of care ultrasound and leadership. He will also be serving as a Chair and member of a number of DNP scholarly projects.
Service
Dr. Giordano has a long history of service to the University of Pittsburgh and the community. He has volunteered for many years as an adjunct faculty and clinical instructor for the Pitt Nurse Anesthesia Program. Further, he is an officer in the United States Air Force. In 2020-2023, Lt Col Giordano was deployed to New York City to aide in Covid-19 relief efforts during the primary surge and recently returned from Qatar where he played a critical role in the handling of the Afghan refugee crisis. In addition to his military service, he serves on the Nurse Anesthesia Program Clinical Advisory Board (CAB) and Admissions Committee.
