On-campus Global Opportunities for Nursing Students
Global Health Certificate
The Undergraduate Certificate in Global Health is for students wanting to get equipped with the analytical tools and professional skills necessary to address our world’s most compelling issues. Students with a Certificate in Global Health will explore the transnational processes underpinning the global burden of disease and the social determinants of health, as well as related inequalities in access to high-quality medical care.
Students tailor a unique program of study based on their academic, personal and career interests, including 18 credits of coursework and co-curricular experiential engagements.
Upon completion of the students will be able to:
- Understand the global burden of disease, social determinants of health, and treatment disparities from a transnational and historical perspective
- Differentiate current research, programs, strategies, and coordination mechanisms that address these issues in a variety of settings, along with key organizational actors
- Recognize the behavioral and cultural dimensions of health in myriad contexts
- Appreciate how different disciplines approach these issues and apply one or more such approaches to a key question in global health
- Critique different discourses on global health (e.g., medical, policy, anthropological) and communicate effectively about these issues orally and in writing to an interdisciplinary audience (Pitt UCIS).
Pitt Nursing students are encouraged to enroll in the certificate. To get started, complete the survey.
Pitt Global Health Case Competition
Pitt’s Global Health Case Competition is an intensive and exciting dive into a real-world global health problem. The competition is designed to give undergraduate and graduate students professional experience in developing innovative 21st century solutions and strategies to address a real-world global health issue. We welcome all students from the University of Pittsburgh and students enrolled in institutions located within Northern and North Central Appalachian Regions (About the Appalachian Region - Appalachian Regional Commission).
Over a two-week timeframe, interdisciplinary teams of four to six graduate and undergraduate students will develop a plan to address a scenario in a holistic way based on information garnered during a series of presentation/workshop by experts along with a comprehensive library guide prepared specifically for the case study.
The top teams will receive cash prizes and support to register and, if accepted, to attend the Emory Morningside Global Health Case Competition.
Nursing Global Ambassadors
Pitt Undergraduate Nursing students from Pittsburgh, Greensburg, and Johnstown campuses, are invited to apply to be a Nursing Global Ambassador. This is a student leadership opportunity on campus to grow awareness about Nursing Global Experience programs and global engagement at Pitt. This is a great opportunity for students who already have or would like to participate in Global Experience program, study or minor in a foreign language, pursue a Global Health Certificate or other area studies certificate, and/or are an international student (although these things are not required) - or for any Nursing student with global interests. No previous leadership experience is required.
Ambassadors will share about global experiences and opportunities in presentations, table at fairs, and visit with student organizations at their campus. Ambassadors will also have opportunities to connect with the global community at Pitt School of Nursing, such as meeting with international visiting scholars and students.
For more information about the Global Ambassadors, please contact Lynnea Lombardi at LEL164@pitt.edu. Applications for 2026-27 will open in Summer 2026.
