Over 800 guests gathered at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh on November 3 for the annual Cameos of Caring Gala. 79 honorees were recognized from facilities across western Pennsylvania and Italy.
When the Cameos of Caring tradition began in 1999, it was initially centered on recognizing bedside nurses who exhibited exceptional dedication to patient care. Today, it celebrates nurses in advanced practice roles, those specializing in quality and safety, nurses who excel in care management, champions of organ and tissue donation, and the faculty devoted to educating the next general of professional nurses. In 2023, the Research and Scholarship award category was added to recognize those profoundly impacting nursing science.
Three University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing faculty were honored during the awards ceremony:
- Catherine Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN, Lifetime Achievement Award winner
- Denise Charron-Prochownik, PhD, RN, CPNP, FAAN, Research and Scholarship Award winner
- Susan W. Wesmiller, PhD, RN, FAAN, Nurse Educator Award winner

Proceeds from the gala support the Cameos of Caring Endowed Nursing Scholarship, which supports registered nurses pursuing an advanced degree.
