Plus3 Nursing Programs
Applications due December 5, 2025
Plus3 is your first chance to study abroad at Pitt, and there are three program options for Nursing students. These two-week, three-credit interdisciplinary experiences will give you a firsthand glimpse of globalization through site visits, discussions with experts, and academic lectures that provide cultural and political perspectives.
Plus3 programs are open to first-year students only. Applicants apply during the fall semester of their first year and participate in the program in May immediately following their first year.

Plus3 United Kingdom: Intersectionality at the Crossroads of Education and Healthcare
For Nursing and Education students
The academic focus of this program is an introduction to public health nursing and early childhood education. Built upon a comparative, multidisciplinary framework, this course addresses health services, education, and social services for children and families within the context of race, gender, ethnicity, and sexuality while providing students with a broad perspective on the distinctive healthcare and education systems in the United Kingdom and the United States. - Site visits may include: Public and private hospitals and schools, Birmingham City University, Nursing Home, Children's Hospital, Sixth Form College, Nursing Skills Lab
- Lecture topics may include: School Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Education Systems, Women's Health
- Cultural activities may include: Florence Nightingale Museum, Black Heritage History Tour, Shakespeare's Birthplace, Black Country Living Museum, Blenheim Palace, Oxford University
- Locations may include the city of Birmingham and daytrips to London, Oxford, and Stratford-upon-Avon

Plus3 Argentina: Healthcare Management
For Nursing and Business students
This program will provide you with first-hand knowledge of the impacts of globalization on healthcare in a middle-income country. You will focus first on understanding major themes in global healthcare, such as global burden of disease, determinants of health, and health and economic inequality. Background on Argentina's history and politics will provide you with a foundation to use during your site visits within the healthcare industry and Q&A sessions with industry stakeholders. By the end of this you will have an understanding of the mechanisms of delivering, financing, and managing healthcare in Argentina. - Site visits may include Universidad Austral, Universidad Nacional de la Matanza, Uni Hospital Universitario Austral, public and private hospitals, National Minister of Health, Union of Retail Workers, Rural Island clinic
- Lecture topics may include: Obras Sociales, Buenos Aires City Government, Public Sector: Healthcare City of Buenos Aires, Province Ministry of Health, History and Model of Universidad Austral and Hospital Universitario Austra;
- Cultural activities may include City tour of Buenos Aires, tango lesson and show, visit to an Estancia (Ranch), Plaza de Mayo, Evita Museum, Museum of Ethnography, and MALBA Museum
- Locations may include the city of Buenos Aires Buenos Aires, Pilar, and Tigre

Plus3 Spain - Healthcare, Innovation, and Technology
For Nursing and Engineering students
Embark on an enriching journey in Bilbao, where students will explore the intersections of Spanish healthcare, innovation, and technology. The program includes technical visits to health and innovation centers, offering insights into care practices and medical devices. Dynamic lectures and workshops will facilitate comparisons between the Spanish and U.S. healthcare systems, while Q&A sessions with industry executives will provide perspectives on trends and challenges in health technology. While base in Bilbao, students will explore the city's renowned architecture, including the Guggenheim Museum, and become immersed in the local culture and cuisine, fostering a comprehensive understanding of global healthcare practices and the role of innovation. This program will be based in Bilbao (with excursions to surrounding areas) and include an array of cultural and professional visits.
- Site visits may include: Basurto Hospital, BioBizkaia research institute, Hospital Gorliz, Tekniker Research & Technology Center
- Lectures may include: Presentation/demonstration of current medical devices in clinical trials at University of the Basque Country, VentiJet startup presentation
- Cultural activities may include: Guggenheim Museum, Basque cooking class, San Juan de Gazteulugatxe, Bosque Oma, Vizcaya Brige (Hanging Bridge), Arriaga Theatre, Casa de Juntas Gernika
- Locations may include Bilbao, San Sebastian, Getxo, Plentzia, Gernika, Bermeo

Healthcare Delivery at Saint Regis Mohawk
Applications due January 20, 2026
This 3-credit study away course exposes students to an American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) culture and health care delivery system. Emphasis is placed on exploring health issues and risk factors, the impact of cultural characteristics on health disparity, health outcomes, and health care delivery and utilization, and the achievement of health-related goals. Students will be required to complete class sessions online prior to and following the program.
During the program there will be many site visits, field trips and cultural activities. Students will meet with local tribal members, healthcare professionals (nurses and doctors), and healthcare administrators with in the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe Health Services. The program includes visits to the Tribal Medical Clinic, Diabetes Center and Outreach Department.
Students will also have cultural enrichment experiences including visits to the Cultural Center and library. Some of the highlight experiences are a medicine walk trail through the woods with a traditional knowledge keeper, visiting community gardens, and a pontoon boat ride on the Saint Lawrence River to view areas of the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory.

What You'll Accomplish
As an engaged and active participant in this program, you will have the opportunity to develop:
- An understanding of health disparities of the AI/AN population
- A basis for comparison of the health care system of Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal community with the general US health care system
- A connection with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal culture’s influence on its community’s health outcomes, health care delivery system and utilization
- Ability to identify the major health problems/risk factors in Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal community
- Reflection on the impact of the study away experience on personal and professional growth
