Profile
Dr. Vasantha Gurusamy is an adult health registered nurse with 22 years of nursing experience and 19 years of experience in nursing education. She has worked in various nursing capacities as a professional staff nurse, clinical instructor, nursing tutor, lecturer and assistant nursing superintendent. She is currently a clinical instructor and faculty member in the Acute and Tertiary Care Nursing Department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing.
Clinical Emphasis
Dr. Gurusamy has a strong background in intense coronary care, critical care, and general medical-surgical nursing. As a postgraduate nurse specializing in cardiothoracic nursing and adult health, she improves patient care using evidence-based approaches, resulting in improved clinical outcomes and a more positive patient experience.
Scholarly Emphasis
Dr. Gurusamy has a strong commitment to professional growth, mentoring, and patient care quality. Her research focuses on holistic nursing, a patient-centered approach that integrates complementary and alternative therapies into nursing practice. She is especially interested in researching people with chronic diseases to improve their quality of life. She also aspires to create innovative and efficient nursing practice and teaching initiatives.
Teaching
Dr. Gurusamy teaches clinical courses for traditional sophomore and junior-level students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She participates in simulation activities that aim to improve these students' practical learning experiences. She assists in the skills lab in foundations of nursing practice for accelerated BSN students.
Service
Dr. Gurusamy was Vice Principal and Principal at Minerva School of Nursing, Prathipadu, Andhra Pradesh, India. She has served as an Assistant Nursing Superintendent at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, Mangalore, Karnataka, India.
