Profile
Dr. Cynthia Chew is an Assistant Professor of Nursing in the Department of Health Promotion and Development. She is coordinator of Nurse Practitioner Programs and the Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program track.
Dr. Chew maintains clinical practice as a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner and lactation consultant at Pediatric Associates of Westmoreland. She frequently precepts nurse practitioner and midwifery students in the Newborn and Lactation Suite at this clinical site.

Prior to obtaining her nurse practitioner certification, Dr. Chew practiced as a senior professional staff nurse at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC on various obstetrics units and in the NICU.
Scholarly Emphasis
Dr. Chew’s scholarly interests include health promotion of infants, especially related to nutrition and oral health. She has published and presented regionally and nationally regarding lactation support and education and other infant care topics. Additionally, she is interested in teaching as research. She is integrating and evaluating telehealth curriculum within the nurse practitioner program and assisting in the development of simulation activities for pre-licensure students in pediatrics and obstetrics clinical courses.
Teaching
Dr. Chew teaches primarily in graduate APRN programs providing pediatric content for courses such as Diagnostic Physical Exam Across the Lifespan. She is the primary faculty for the primary care pediatric nurse practitioner program and teaches several didactic and clinical classes with the program including Pediatric Well Child Theory. She has previously taught various classes to pre-licensure students, including Nursing Care of Mothers, Newborns and Families didactic and clinical.
Service
Dr. Chew is passionate about advancing the role of nurse practitioners and actively participates in several professional organizations. She is a member of the National Association or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and was re-elected for a second term on the National Nominations Committee in 2024. She has served as treasurer, president, legislative committee co-chair, and student liaison for the Pennsylvania Three Rivers Chapter of NAPNAP. Dr. Chew is a member of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners (PCNP) and previously served as a Board Representative for her region. Her work with PCNP includes lobbying legislators to expand scope of practice for nurse practitioners in Pennsylvania. She is also a member of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) and is currently serving on the NONPF Telehealth Committee.
