Profile

Dr. Heinsberg has methodological expertise in genetic- and genomic-based research approaches. Her primary research focuses on identifying genomic, environmental, and behavioral factors contributing to the early life origins of obesity-related chronic disease, with an emphasis on pregnancy and early childhood. In addition to this work, she collaborates on genomic research across multiple populations, including studies on subarachnoid hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Dr. Heinsberg’s research portfolio is distinguished by securing grants as Principal Investigator from the National Institutes of Health, the American Nurses Foundation, the Rockefeller University, Sigma Nursing, and more. With a background in civil engineering and advanced training in both nursing and human genetics, Dr. Heinsberg brings a unique interdisciplinary lens to her research and collaborations. She is also committed to capacity-building in science, mentoring others in R programming, statistical methods, and thoughtful integration of generative AI tools into research workflows.

Outside of work, she enjoys CrossFit, biking, running, reading, and spending time with the people and animals she loves.

Dr. Heinsberg teaches NUR 2681 – Advanced Topics in Human Genetics.

Service

Dr. Heinsberg is a member of several professional organizations including the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG), Eastern Nursing Research Society, and Sigma Nursing. Dr. Heinsberg has served as the Global Membership Committee Co-Chair of ISONG.
