Profile

Dr. Calhoun joined the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 2018.  She earned her Bachelor of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University in 2005.  She worked as an engineer for three years, where she gained experience in concrete production and construction.

She returned to school at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she completed her pre-licensure nursing curriculum in 2010.  Jackie earned her MSN from Rush University in 2013, where she studied in the Pediatric Acute/Chronic Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.  She was first certified as a Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner by the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board in 2013.  Dr. Calhoun earned her DNP in Health Systems Executive Leadership from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020. She is currently a PhD Student in Health Policy and Management in the School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh.

Jackie is an Associate Director Nursing Health Services and Policy Research HUB at the Pitt School of Nursing. She is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, where she serves on the national Professional Issues Committee and as the Legislative Chair of the local Three Rivers NAPNAP chapter; the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty, where she serves on the national Curriculum Leadership Committee, and AcademyHealth.  She is also a member of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau, the International Honor Society of Nursing.

Clinical Emphasis

Dr. Calhoun's clinical focus is in Pediatric Critical Care.

Scholarly Emphasis

Dr. Calhoun’s area of research is healthcare workforce supply, particularly with regard to nurse practitioners. She is interested in how current workforce models treat the NP profession and how the NP educational and employment systems impact the composition of NP supply.

Paper 1 – Stratification of NP supply by certification type and comparison of those calculations to historic and projected NP estimates.

Paper 2 – Quasi-experimental study to understand the relationship between NP program availability and NP student enrollment by educational program and certification type.

Paper 3 – Development of equations and assumptions to ultimately construct a healthcare workforce supply model accurately considers NP certification. Analysis of existing NP-related workforce policies and development of recommendations for future policy.

Dr. Calhoun currently teaches NUR 2033 - Differential Diagnosis (Pediatric Content), NURNP 2028 - NP Role Practicum, NURNP 2029 - Role Seminar 2, NURNP 2531 - Pediatric Acute Care 1, NURNP 2532 - Pediatric Acute Care 2, NURNP 2533 - Management: Pediatric Acute Care Clinical 1, NURNP 2534 - Management: Pediatric Acute Care Clinical 2, NURNP 2518 - Family Health Theory, NURNP 2549 - Advanced Pediatric Health Problems Theory, and NURNP 3038 - DNP Role Practicum (PNP Students).

Service

Dr. Calhoun has served as a member of the Nursing Section Communications Committee, SCCM from 2018-2021; was an Appointed Member of the Patient and Family Centered Care Committee, SCCM from 2018-2022; was Treasurer of the PA Three Rivers Chapter of the NAPNAP from 2020-2022. She is a current member of the Pediatric APP Section, SCCM; the Legislative Chair, PA: Three Rivers Chapter, NAPNAP; an appointed member of the Curriculum Leadership Committee, NONPF; current Chair of the Pediatric Acute Care Program Directors Faculty Workgroup, NAPNAP; and Board Member of the Pennsylvania Coalition of Nurse Practitioners.
