Young Ji Lee
PhD, MS, RN
Vice Chair for Administration
Associate Professor of Nursing and Medicine
Health & Community Systems
Profile
Dr. Lee specializes in health informatics, with a focus on enhancing the structure and delivery of health information through AI systems tailored to individual needs. Most recently, she served as the Principal Investigator of an NIH-funded project (R01LM013038) that developed HELPeR—Health E-Librarian with Personalized Recommendations, a hybrid recommender system designed to support ovarian cancer patients in navigating online health resources. The system combines recommender algorithms and personalized user modeling to increase the use of relevant information and support patient self-management. Previously, she led a pilot project within the P2aTH initiative (PCORI CDRN-1306-04912), embedding patient-centered visualizations to explore how personalized digital tools can support decision-making across therapeutic options. Dr. Lee's current research expands into explainable AI (XAI) in healthcare, with particular interest in how transparency and adaptability influence user trust, engagement, and system adoption.
Scholarly Emphasis
Dr. Lee's research focus is in AI-Driven Health Information Systems, Digital Health Communication, and Big Data Analytics for Patient Insight.
Teaching
Dr. Lee teaches NURSP 2075 Intro to Health Informatics (both face-to-face and online classes), NURSP 2076 Clinical Information System (online only), and NURSP 2085 and 2086 Nursing Informatics practicum I and II.
Service
Dr. Lee has leveraged her scholarship to make an impact through national, community, and university service. She currently serves as Chair of the Education Committee for the Nursing Informatics Working Group of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA-NIWG). Previously, she was recognized as an Emerging Leader by the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) for my leadership potential. Dr LeeI also served on the Advisory Committee of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Connected Health/Telehealth Professional Issues Panel, where she contributed to the revision of the ANA Core Principles on Telehealth.
