Non-Degree Students

The School of Nursing's Non-Degree Seeking option enables you to complete a maximum of 12 undergraduate or graduate credits - while in the process of applying to either undergraduate or graduate nursing programs. Taking classes as a non-degree seeking student does not guarantee admission into our Graduate Program. Apply as an Undergraduate or Graduate Non-Degree Seeking student

After receipt of the complete application, an advisor will contact you regarding course selection and enrollment.

Available Courses

Courses available to non-degree seeking students are core courses in the curriculum of most of our Master's and BSN-DNP Programs. You can take up to 12 credits as a graduate non-degree seeking student. Taking classes as a non-degree seeking student does not guarantee admission into a graduate program. Class availability varies by term.

* These courses are not required in the Health Systems Executive Leadership, Nursing Informatics, or School Nurse Concentrations.
+ This course is required within 5 years to take the National Certification Exam.

 

Graduate students in the School of Nursing must earn a B- or better in core courses in order to progress in a graduate program (School of Nursing Policy 283). A student who receives a C+ or lower grade in a required course must repeat the course and receive a B- or better to successfully progress and/or complete the degree. No course may be repeated more than once.

Guidelines for Graduate-Level Non-Degree Students

The following guidelines apply to SNDS students at the graduate level:

  • If you plan to apply to a specific Master’s or Doctoral program and are interested in enrolling in courses other than those available to SNDS students, the Program Coordinator or Director should approve your request to take a course.

  • Students are responsible for abiding by the policies of the School of Nursing posted at www.nursing.pitt.edu. It is essential that students regularly review and familiarize themselves with those policies. Questions about policies should be directed to Student Affairs or the appropriate faculty advisor.

  • SNDS students who wish to apply to a Master’s or Doctoral program in the future must follow the Master’s or Doctoral program admission process and meet the regular admission criteria. Upon admission, a maximum of 12 credits taken as a SNDS student may be counted toward a Masters or Doctoral degree with faculty approval.

  • Graduate students are required to receive a B- grade or better to successfully progress. Any student who receives a C+ grade or lower in a required course must repeat the course. No course may be repeated more than once. Only two courses may be repeated throughout the entire program of study. Please see the School of Nursing Policy No. 283.

  • Any student who has a disability should contact Disability Resources and Services (DRS) for accommodations.

FAQs

After your complete application is received, an advisor will contact you and help enroll you in the available course(s).

Courses are not available in every term and may only be taken on a space available basis.

If you decide that you are unable to attend a class that you are registered for, you must complete an Add/Drop form and submit it to Student Services prior to the deadline to drop a course. This will drop the course and cancel your bill. Classes are not dropped by not attending class. Information regarding deadlines for registration and add/drop as well as class schedules are available via the Office of the Registrar.

Taking classes as a SNDS Student does not guarantee acceptance into a Master’s or Doctoral program.


Please note: Financial Aid is not available to students who are enrolled in the non-degree seeking status.

    Registration Information

    When you have registered for courses at the University of Pittsburgh, your bills will arrive electronically via eBills. Each month you will be sent an e-mail to your official university e-mail account announcing that your eBill is available. eBills will then be available to view and pay in PittPAY. You must pay the bill by the deadline indicated or make arrangements for payment with the Student accounts/Payment Center Office (412-624-7520). You must also meet the course requirements during the term.

    Your registration will not be canceled unless you complete the paperwork to do so. There are forms to drop or add a course, which can be done the first two weeks of the term, and there are also forms to withdraw from a class. Obtain these forms via the Student Affairs Office. Failure to complete one of these forms means you will not meet the course requirements during the term and receive a failing grade.

    When you are a continuing student (you have registered for a least one term in the past year), you must register for the next term by the registration deadline for continuing students, or you will have to pay a late registration fee. Pay particular attention to deadlines for registration, add/drop and withdrawal.
