Pitt Nursing welcomes international faculty and advanced graduate students to spend time at Pitt Nursing as an International Visiting Scholar to pursue an individually designed, mentored program to enhance their research, teaching, and/or clinical skills.

Application Process

1. The potential International Visiting Scholars should identify a Pitt Nursing faculty member(s) that aligns with their area of research and then contact them by email to initiate the request.
   
2. After the Pitt Nursing faculty member(s) agrees to be the mentoring faculty, the potential International Visiting Scholar should submit the application form: https://forms.office.com/r/40vPiktHDT
   
3. Application timeline: Potential International Visiting Scholars should submit their application at least 4 months in advance of when they plan to arrive at Pitt Nursing.
   
4. Length of time as an International Visiting Scholar: From 1 week to 1 year, depending on the request of the potential International Visiting Sholar and availability of the Pitt Nursing faculty mentor. Arrival and departure dates are determined by the potential International Visiting Scholar and the Pitt Nursing faculty mentor.
   
5. English Language Requirement: The potential International Visiting Scholar is required to provide documentation of English language proficiency that meets at least one of the stated requirements on the application form.

Preparing to Come to Pitt Nursing

1. The Director for International Affairs will work with the potential International Visiting Scholar and their Pitt Nursing faculty mentor to& submit the scholar’s research plans to the Office of Export Control. After the Office of Export approves the research plan, they will provide a Participation Agreement to the International Visiting Scholar to review and sign with their respective home institution.
   
2. The Director for International Affairs will work with the potential International Visiting Scholar to process the appropriate immigration documentation through the Pitt Office of International Services, if/as needed.
   
3. International Visiting Scholar Fee: $1,200 USD per term (can be prorated to approximately $300 a month). Payment of the fee is due upon arrival at Pitt Nursing. The International Visiting Scholar will be responsible for all costs associated with participating in the international visiting scholar program (e.g., Pitt SON fee, accommodation, international insurance, food, transportation, etc.).
   
4. Finding Accommodation in Pittsburgh: The Director for International Affairs can provide resources for selecting housing to the International Visiting Scholar; however, securing housing and paying all related living expenses is the responsibility of the International Visiting Scholar. Please note that the Pitt ID card issued to International Visiting Scholars does not include free access to the PRT city bus system.

While at Pitt Nursing

1. International Visiting Scholars may attend courses but will not have access to any course materials unless they are enrolled in the course as either auditing or as a non-degree seeking student. International Visiting Scholars who elect to either audit or take courses for credit while in residence at Pitt will register through Pitt Nursing as a special non-degree-seeking student.
   • The International Visiting Scholar will be charged Pitt’s out-of-state tuition rate, and they will be entitled to receive and/or have access to all course materials (e.g., syllabus, assignments, handouts, etc.) that are typically provided as part of the course for registered students.
     
   • In contrast, International Visiting Scholars who attend (i.e., observe) a course while in residence at Pitt (i.e., not pay tuition) will not be entitled to receive and/or have access to the materials of the given course; moreover, the International Visiting Scholar will need to be granted permission to attend the course by the instructor of the course. The Pitt Nursing Faculty Mentor needs to be involved in this process, as International Visiting Scholars do not have access to course information that would allow them to make informed decisions about course selection.
     
2. International Visiting Scholars will be provided with office space with Wi-Fi access and office supplies, copy/printer access, a Pitt email account, and ID card, and copy/printer access.
   
3. If an International Visiting Scholar wishes to incorporate a clinical component into their stay, the Pitt Nursing Director for International Affairs will seek approval from the clinical site, which may charge an additional fee.
   
4. Throughout the remainder of their tenure at Pitt, the international visiting scholar will collaborate with their respective Pitt Nursing faculty member mentor in achieving the agreed-upon goals of the experience. The Director for International Affairs will remain a point-of-contact for the international visiting scholar to assist with administrative, academic, or logistical issues.
