Dress Code for Clinical Settings

POLICY:

The uniform identifies an individual as a student in the University of Pittsburgh, School of Nursing and is to reflect a positive and professional image of the individual and the School. The following regulations govern Student Dress Code for Clinical Settings.

Dress Code for Students (Hospital and Community Agency Uniform) Uniform will be selected by the School of Nursing.

PROCEDURE:

General Regulations

• The uniform is worn during clinical laboratory experience conducted in agencies where the use of a uniform is required.
• The uniform can be worn during travel between one’s place of residence, lower campus, nursing classes and areas of clinical practice.

General Regulations for All Students

• Variations in dress code due to the requirements of the clinical setting will be clarified by faculty or clinical preceptor.
• Exceptions to the dress code which are related to cultural or religious beliefs may be granted by the appropriate Associate Dean or a designee, upon written request by the student.
• The uniform is to be neat and clean at all times. Solid (no mesh uppers), predominantly white shoes must be neat and clean. No open-toed shoes or sandals.
• Watch and stethoscope are required accessories.
• A white laboratory coat may be worn over uniform or street clothes when directed by faculty.
• When street clothes are worn, they must conform to the dress code of the clinical agency.
• Hair is to be neatly groomed, off the collar, in a style appropriate for a professional person
• Students are to be clean shaven or have a neatly trimmed beard.
• Nails are to be clean, neat, and short in length. No artificial nails are permitted.
• Make-up is to be applied so that a natural look is conveyed.
• Students may wear a smooth band ring and a federal service pin(s) for recognized professional and honor societies.
• Any additional clothing worn under the uniform must be solid black, blue, grey, or white and not contain any graphics.
• Undergarments cannot be visible.
• Visible tattoos and piercings should be managed according to the policy of the clinical agency.
• No hoop earrings are permitted.
• Perfume, cologne or aftershave is not permitted.
• Dress code requirements may change based on the clinical agency’s procedures/infection practices. It is the responsibility of each student to follow these regulations.
