Admission: Requirements for External and Internal Transfer Applicants

POLICY: All external and internal transfer student applicants are reviewed, and an admission decision is made by the School of Nursing. Transfer student applicants are reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis.

PROCEDURE:

1. Applications from schools external to Pitt and internal within Pitt are reviewed by the Office of Admissions within the School of Nursing

1. 1. Applicants who have completed at least twelve (12) credits or one full term of study at any accredited institution of higher education are defined as transfer students. To be considered as a transfer student, an applicant must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or greater on a 4.0 scale and a minimum of “B” grades in all college-level science courses.
   2. Applications will be reviewed, and decisions will be made based on the student’s college and high school performance and the number of seats available in the class. The evaluations will consider grade trends, cumulative GPA, number of credits completed, the level of curricular challenge, the transferability of credits, and coursework relevant to the major.
   3. Applicants who have been dismissed from another school will be considered on an individual basis. Factors which shall be considered are the reason for dismissal, academic standing, the applicant's references, a personal interview, and/or a follow-up call to the dean or director of the former school upon the written permission of the student.
   4. Applicants are advised that, once admitted, Act 33/34/73/168 (Criminal Record Check/Child Abuse History/FBI/PA Sexual Misconduct) Clearances, a drug screen, and/or additional testing may be required by some clinical facilities. (See Policy 369).
   5. Applicants who plan to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (as well as most other states) should be advised that upon application for the Registered Nurse Licensure Examination, the Board of Nursing will inquire as to whether the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor, felony, felonious act, an illegal act associated with alcohol, or an illegal act associated with substance abuse(s).
2. Pitt Nursing transfer students admitted to the Oakland campus, the Johnstown campus (UPJ), or the Greensburg campus (UPG) BSN program are expected to complete the program at the site of admission. However, we recognize there will be cases where there is a need for inter-campus transfer within the SON as well as potential internal Pitt transfer applicants (from other University schools) or from potential transfer applicants external to the University.

• Transfer student applicants are reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis. Transfer student applications require approval from the University of Pittsburgh SON Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, with review conducted according to the following categories, listed in order of priority.

   2. Internal from another University of Pittsburgh School to the Pitt School of Nursing Oakland, UPG or UPJ Campus
   3. From an accredited academic institution external to the University of Pittsburgh to the School of Nursing to the School of Nursing on the Oakland, UPG or UPJ campus
