POLICY:

When a no cost extension (NCE) is required for an NIH funded research project, Principal Investigators (PI) are required to maintain effort on the project.

PROCEDURE:

When a no cost extension (NCE) is required for an NIH funded research project, Principal Investigators (PI) are required to maintain effort on the project. The School of Nursing will cost share a maximum of 10% full time effort (FTE) towards the PI’s effort. If more than 10% FTE is required, the remainder of the cost (effort and fringe) will be encumbered to the remaining unobligated funds of the award during the NCE period. The 10% FTE cost shared by the School of Nursing will be subtracted from the PI’s protected time that is funded by the School of Nursing for research and scholarship. This cost sharing is only available to full time faculty and only available for awards that received full indirects throughout the funding period. NIH awards that require substantial FTE be maintained during a NCE (e.g. K-awards) will only be allowed to go into a NCE if the PI’s required effort plus fringe minus the 10% cost shared by the School of Nursing can be maintained from unobligated funds of the award during the NCE period.
