POLICY:
*The Pitt Promise: A Commitment to Civility
The University of Pittsburgh is committed to the advancement of learning and service to society. This is best accomplished in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility, self-restraint, concern for others, and academic integrity. By choosing to join this community, I accept the obligation to live by these common values and commit myself to the following principles:
As a Pitt Student:
I will embrace the concept of a civil community which abhors violence, theft and exploitation of others;
I will commit myself to the pursuit of knowledge with personal integrity and academic honesty;
I will respect the sanctity of the learning environment and avoid disruptive and deceitful behavior toward other members of the campus community;
I will support a culture of diversity by respecting the rights of those who differ from me;
I will contribute to the development of a caring community where compassion for others and freedom of thought and expression are valued;
I will honor, challenge and contribute to the scholarly heritage left by those who preceded me and work to leave this a better place for those who follow.
By endorsing these common principles, I accept a moral obligation to behave in ways that contribute to a civil campus environment and resolve to support this behavior in others. School of Nursing Code of Conduct: A Commitment to Professionalism
The University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing is committed to the advancement of the nursing profession. This is best accomplished through the professional obligation to conduct oneself in a manner that reflects honesty, integrity, and respect for others. By choosing the nursing profession, I accept the obligation to uphold the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses in the classroom, laboratory, and clinical site. When I represent the School of Nursing, and, at any time that I wear the uniform of the School of Nursing, I commit myself to the following principles:
*Code for Nurses:
The nurse, in all professional relationships, practices with compassion and respect for the inherent dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual, unrestricted by considerations of social or economic status, personal attributes, or the nature of health problems.
The nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether an individual, family, group, or community.
The nurse promotes, advocates for, and strives to protect the health, safety, and rights of the patient.
The nurse is responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks consistent with the nurse's obligation to provide optimum patient care.
The nurse owes the same duties to self as others, including the responsibility to preserve integrity and safety, to maintain competence, and to continue personal and professional growth.
The nurse participates in establishing, maintaining, and improving healthcare environments and conditions of employment conducive to the provision of quality health care and consistent with the values of the profession through individual and collective action.
The nurse participates in the advancement of the profession through contributions to practice, education, administration, and knowledge development.
The nurse collaborates with other health professionals and the public in promoting community, national, and international efforts to meet health needs.
The profession of nursing, as represented by associations and their members, is responsible for articulating nursing values, for maintaining the integrity of the profession and its practice, and for shaping social policy. (American Nurse Association Code of Ethics)
PROCEDURE:
Undergraduate students will sign this document during the time in which they participate in the Sophomore White Coat Ceremony.
Graduate students will sign this document during the time in which they complete their orientation module, which will include this policy.
The student agrees via their signature on the Student Code of Conduct that this commitment to civility and this commitment to professionalism is my promise to the University of Pittsburgh, the School of Nursing, the patients, families, groups, and communities to behave in ways that support these behaviors.
