POLICY:
Faculty members teaching clinical courses in advanced practice majors/areas of concentration are required to provide evidence of expertise in their subject areas; to be currently licensed as an RN in Pennsylvania; to be certified as an advanced practice provider in the Commonwealth (if applicable); and to maintain National Certification as an advanced practice nurse. Faculty members teaching clinical courses must provide evidence of maintaining expertise in their clinical area and must “maintain currency in clinical practice through ongoing clinical practice” per Pennsylvania Code § 21.367. Faculty requirements for CRNP programs.
PROCEDURE:
- Faculty members performing professional services/practice outside of their University position will follow Policy CS 09 Outside Employment.
- Faculty members performing professional services/practice within their University position will be given release time to the extent that equivalent compensation is returned to the School to cover costs.
- Maintaining licensure and certification will be considered in annual evaluation and reappointment considerations.
- Ideally, opportunities for faculty practice that involve the provision of direct clinical care are in a UPMC or University facility.
- If the faculty practice site is not in a University facility, faculty cannot identify themselves as a representative of the University, and they are not covered by the School of Nursing’s malpractice insurance policy.
