Policy No. 10

UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH
SCHOOL OF NURSING
ACADEMIC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
FOR THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

TITLE OF POLICY:

READMISSION

ORIGINAL DATE:

SEPTEMBER 1, 1995

LAST REVIEWED/REVISED:

JANUARY 2025

POLICY:

A new/readmitted student who did not register in the term of admission/readmission is considered inactive and must be reactivated by Student Affairs before registering for a subsequent term.

A student who has not registered for three consecutive terms (Fall, Spring, Summer) will be transferred automatically to inactive status. The student must file an application for readmission before being permitted to register again. While on inactive status, a student is not eligible to use the University facilities and should not expect to receive counseling by the faculty or their advisor.

A student who has been dismissed may apply for readmission.

Readmission is not automatic, nor does it necessarily reinstate the student in the status enjoyed prior to becoming inactive. When readmitted, the student must be prepared to demonstrate proper preparation to meet all current admission and degree requirements. A student may not be readmitted for the term in which they resigned.

PROCEDURE:

  1. Readmission policies, procedures and rules are the same as admission policies for undergraduate students. In addition, transcripts of all academic studies completed at the University of Pittsburgh or at other institutions since withdrawal from the School of Nursing must be submitted.
  2. A new/readmitted student who does not register in the term of admission/readmission should contact the Center for Student Success about registering for a subsequent term.
  3. A student who has not been in attendance in the school for more than three terms will be required to seek
readmission through the School of Nursing and confirm clinical compliance.
  4. A student who has attended another school while not attending the University of Pittsburgh is required to reapply through the University Office of Admission and Financial Aid.
  5. A student who has withdrawn while on academic probation or who was dismissed because of unsatisfactory academic achievement may be considered on an individual basis by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in consultation with administration and appropriate other faculty in compliance with university policy. To be considered for readmission, a student must have a University of Pittsburgh cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and submit evidence supporting why they will be academically successful at this time. Additional information may be requested such as references or a personal interview and may set requirements as a condition for readmission that are designed to enhance the student’s chances for academic success.
  6. Students, who have been dismissed from the School of Nursing for any nonacademic reason, will be considered for readmission on an individual basis by the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education in consultation with administration and appropriate other faculty in compliance with university policy. Factors which shall be considered are the reason for dismissal, academic standing, the applicant references, a personal interview, and additional relevant information with permission of the applicant.
  7. Upon readmission, the program of studies will be based on courses completed, current curriculum and placement considerations.
