Biography
Dr. Nancy Niemczyk has been a midwifery leader in southwest Pennsylvania for over 20 years. She helped found a freestanding birth center at Allegheny General Hospital, and was the founding director of the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health, now the country’s largest accredited freestanding birth center. She has provided care in setting ranging from the office to the Allegheny County Jail, and has attended births in hospitals, birth centers, and at home. She was recognized by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as one of its “Dozen Who Make a Difference” for her role in promoting safe birth options for families in the region.
Dr. Niemczyk has taught nursing, midwifery, nurse-practitioner and medical students, as well as serving as faculty in the Forbes Family Practice Residency Program
Scholarly Emphasis
Dr. Niemczyk’s research is focused on labor in hospital and community settings, and barriers midwives face in care for families experiencing perinatal opioid use disorder.
Teaching
Dr.Niemczyk teaches all aspects of full scope midwifery care.
Service
Dr. Niemczyk serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health; was a member of the PA Maternal Mortality Review Committee from 2018-2024; is the current Chair of the American Association of Birth Centers Research Committee; and is a member of the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health Medical Advisory Committee.
