Fei Zhang, PhD, CRNA, RN

Assistant Professor
Nurse Anesthesia

Biography

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on applying deep learning methods on big data from Anesthesia Information Management Systems. He is specifically interested in high-resolution intraoperative data collection, data augmentation from Generative Adversarial Networks and clinical decision support from Deep Neural Networks.  Dr. Zhang has gained ample experience on analyzing large datasets from multiple sources like satellites, aircraft observation, and global climate models during his research experience in marine physics for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

In addition to his research experience, he worked as an ICU nurse at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla. and has worked as a CRNA at UPMC since 2015. His goal is to translate his knowledge and experience gained in ocean science to health care research. He currently serves as co-principle investigator in several research projects including “New Machine Learning Framework to Conduct Anesthesia Risk Stratification and Decision Support for Precision” which is funded by National Science Foundation. His role in this project is providing anesthesia knowledge support, analyzing hierarchical data/clustered designs (e.g., with patients nested within hospital units, and hospital units nested within hospitals), handling of missing data and interrupted time series/segmented regression analysis.

Hospital Affiliation
Dr. Zhang is a Staff CRNA with privileges at UPMC Passavant, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and UPMC St. Margaret.

Teaching

Dr. Zhang is a clinical preceptor at UPMC Passavant. He has been involved in simulation education for nurse anesthesia students.

Service

Dr. Zhang is a current member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists since 2012, and a member of the Healthcare Information and Management System Society (HIMSS) since 2017.
