Research

My research interests are in the field of molecular genetics. I have a fully equipped molecular genetics laboratory located within the School of Nursing, and my lab is involved with several research projects. My current research focuses on genomic and epigenomic studies of patient outcomes after traumatic brain injury, stroke, and therapeutic interventions for cancer, as well as genomic studies of age-related macular degeneration.

Teaching

I am the Director of an NIH funded training program titled “Targeted Research and Academic Training for Nurses in Genomics” (T32NR009759) that educates and trains nurses at the predoctoral and postdoctoral levels to incorporate genomics into their research trajectories. I developed and teach the Advanced Topics in Human Genetics course (NUR2681) that is offered every other summer and I teach the Building a Program of Research course (NUR3051) that is offered every fall. I am also chairperson or a member for doctoral dissertation committees for students who wish to have a genetics-based component as part of their pre-doctoral work.

Service

I serve the University of Pittsburgh as a member of the University Chemical Hygiene Committee; University Biohazard Committee; and the University Postdoctoral Advisory Committee for the Health Sciences. I serve the School of Nursing on the PhD Council and PhD Progression and Graduation Committee. Externally, I am a member of the American Society of Human Genetics, the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science and the International Society of Nurses in Genetics.
