Research

The area of research that I examine is health outcomes of abused women who experience domestic violence and enter a woman`s shelter, and women whose spouse committed suicide. My past studies have shown that there is a difference in the psychological, physical and behavioral health outcomes between abused women who receive intervention and abused women who do not receive intervention. I am also looking at specific factors in loss, and abusive experiences, and in the intervention that account for these differences.

Teaching

I started to teach public health nursing and psychiatric-mental health nursing as soon as I completed my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing Degree in 1962 at the Philippine Union College of Nursing in the Philippines, then at Spring Grove State Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, to Montefiore Hospital , and to the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing in 1971, after I received my law degree and license to practice law. My teaching experience related to small studies on health outcomes of women who are abused by their male intimate partner and women whose spouse committed suicide. With my law practice in family law, I guest lecture on the ethical and legal issues in nursing practice and in the role of nurses, lawyers and physicians in caring for abused women. Currently, I teach several courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs: Intro to Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing; Advanced Forensic Nursing; Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing practicum; Forensic Psychiatric Mental Health, Correctional Nursing; Leadership in Professional Nursing Practice, and Independent Study. These are all Web-Based/Web-Supported courses, conducive to students’ learning and work scheduling needs. I have developed a Certificate Program in Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing and an MSN Minor in Legal Nurse Consulting and Forensic Nursing.
