Research

I am chair of the Acute and Tertiary Care Department, and my primary research interest involves identifying methods of resolving or minimizing dysfunction resulting from pulmonary disease in chronically and critically ill patients. Currently, I am identifying predictors of discharge to home and changes in quality of life in patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation. I am also testing several markers to identify patients most likely to experience cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage, and I direct a project designed to expand our clinical emphasis in trauma/emergency preparedness.

Teaching

At the University of Pittsburgh, I chair the Department of Acute/Tertiary Care. I teach a doctoral course in Research Development and the Research Emphasis in Critical Care. I mentor doctoral students with a broad array of research interests in critical care and pulmonary nursing, including circadian rhythms during therapeutic paralysis, genetic markers of response to intermittent hypoxia, and preferences toward long-term mechanical ventilation. Current doctoral students are testing use of exhaled gas analysis in critically ill patients, interventions to improve outcomes in patients with interstitial pulmonary fibrosis, traumatic brain injury, and ways to mobilize a rapid response team to avert failure to rescue events on inpatient units. My students have been awarded funding from the NIH, NINR (F31), American Lung Association, International Society of Heart & Lung Transplantation, and Sigma Theta Tau International, Eta Chapter.

Service

I served as a member of the Nursing Research Study Section, DRG, NIH and as an Ad Hoc Member of the Study Section reviewing research training grants. Within the American Thoracic Society, I served as Chair of the Nursing Assembly and member of the Research Priorities Task Force. I am an Associate Editor for Critical Care Alert and member of the Research Grant Review Committee for the American Lung Association.
