Research

I am the PhD Program Coordinator, chair of the Department of Health and Community Systems, and my research reflects my interest in ethics, adherence, and quality of life. I am currently testing the effect of nurse delivered telephone interventions based on social cognitive and self-efficacy theories to improve adherence in persons living with HIV infection who are prescribed combination antiretroviral therapy. I am also the Principal Investigator of an institutional training grant focusing on technology-supported interventions to improve outcomes in critical and chronic care.

Teaching

I have been a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh since 1983 teaching students at all levels. I have focused my teaching in the areas of healthcare ethics, grant writing, and manuscript development. I conduct grant writing workshops for postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty who are interested in preparing and submitting grant applications that will help to further their research careers. I advise PhD students, direct dissertations, and mentor junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows. Through my secondary appointment in the Center for Bioethics and Health Law, University of Pittsburgh, I facilitate ethics seminars during the third year medical student clerkships.

Service

I am currently the Coordinator of the PhD Program and Director of the "Technology: Research in Critical and Chronic Illness" (T32 NR008857) pre-doctoral and postdoctoral training program. I am also the Associate Director and Director, Research Development Core of the Center for Research in Chronic Disorders in the School of Nursing (P30 NR03924). I am the current president-elect and 2008 Conference Planning Chair of the Eastern Nursing Research Society and will assume a two-year term as the organization’s president in April 2008. I serve as a collateral reviewer for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, a Study Section reviewer for the National Institute of Nursing Research, as well as a peer reviewer of multiple nursing and interdisciplinary journals. I have a regular column on ethical issues in nursing practice in Orthopaedic Nursing.
