Research
I am the Chair of the Department of Health and Community Systems and have secondary appointments in the Center for Bioethics and Health Law and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. My research reflects my interest in ethics, regimen adherence, and quality of life. I am currently testing the effect of nurse delivered telephone interventions based on social cognitive and self-efficacy theories to improve adherence in persons living with HIV infection who are prescribed combination antiretroviral therapy. Additionally I am examining the effect of an in-home and telephone intervention on caregiver mediated medication management when the patient has cognitive impairment.Teaching
I have been a member of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh since 1983 teaching students at all levels. I have focused my teaching in the areas of healthcare ethics, grant writing, manuscript development, and research. I have conducted grant writing workshops for postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty who are interested in preparing and submitting grant applications that will help to further their research careers. I advise PhD students, direct dissertations, and mentor junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows. Through my secondary appointment in the Center for Bioethics and Health Law, University of Pittsburgh, I facilitate ethics seminars during the third year medical student clerkships.Service
I am the Director of the "Technology: Research in Critical and Chronic Illness" (2T32 NR008857) pre-doctoral and postdoctoral training program. I am a past president of the Eastern Nursing Research Society. I serve as a collateral reviewer for Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, a Study Section reviewer for the National Institute of Nursing Research, as well as a peer reviewer of multiple nursing and interdisciplinary journals. I contribute articles on ethical issues in nursing practice to Orthopaedic Nursing.Education
