Teaching

I am currently Associate Professor and Director of the Family, Adult and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Neonatal Nurse and Psychiatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Area of Concentrations at the University of Pittsburgh School. I also practice as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner. I hold national certification as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center and currently serve as a content expert for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification.

Service

I am a past officer of the American Nurses Association, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and the Pennsylvania Nurses Association. I was elected to Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing in 1989 and was elected as a federal Primary Care Health Policy Fellow in 1997. I am a past president of the American College of Nurse Practitioners and represented the organization on the Task Force that authored The Allergy Report for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. I was a founding editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and recently completed a six-year term as a member of the editorial board of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine. I am author of the Pediatric column in the American Journal for Nurse Practitioners and a member of their editorial board. I have been recognized for her pioneering work in the Nurse Practitioner movement. I was honored as the Nurse of the Year by the Pennsylvania Nurses Association, the Nurse Practitioner of the Year by the American Nurses Association, and as an Outstanding Alumnae by the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing. I was the first recipient of the Lucy Kelly Faculty Leadership Award and used the cash award to study genetics in primary care. My scholarly interests include the education of primary care clinicians especially nurse practitioners, pediatric health and more recently the expanding field of genetics.
