PhD, RN, CNL
Associate Professor
Clinical Nurse Leader Program Coordinator
Acute & Tertiary Care
Profile
I received my PhD from the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences with a minor in nursing through the School of Nursing. My research studied barriers to outpatient care in community settings. I have conducted research on various teaching strategies such as asynchronous learning and high-fidelity human simulation.
Clinical Emphasis
My primary interest lies in advanced medical/surgical nursing and leadership. I also serve as affiliated faculty in the Health Policy Institute of the University of Pittsburgh. In this role I include health policy initiatives for undergraduate and graduate students in both their clinical and didactic course components. I have published in various referred journals on several topics, including pharmacology updates, leadership, teaching strategies, and health policy. I maintain a faculty practice role at UPMC.
Teaching
I have been on faculty at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing since 1995. I am the program coordinator for the Clinical Nurse Leader area of concentration leading to an MSN. I have been a lead faculty member for online programs and courses within the School of Nursing and the University. I am a guest speaker for the undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. I am a faculty member for the Fast Track Back students which helps re-entry into practice for RN’s. I have lectured locally, nationally, and internationally on a variety of teaching strategies that incorporate active learning. I currently advise undergraduate and graduate students in addition to serving as capstone chair for many DNP students. I received the Provost’s Innovation in Teaching Award, which helps incorporate High Fidelity Human Simulated technology into the undergraduate program. In 2007, I received the Distinguished Clinical Scholar’s award to incorporate interprofessional healthcare education within the School of Nursing. I am the nursing school's representative within Pitt's schools of the health sciences to incorporate interprofessional healthcare education.
Service
I am a member of various school committees. I serve as faculty liaison to UPMC Nursing Education and Research for evidence-based practice and research incorporation system-wide. I am a member of Eta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau. I received CNL certification through CNC.
