Jane Guttendorf
DNP, RN, CRNP, ACNP-BC
Assistant Professor
Acute & Tertiary Care
Profile
My DNP Capstone quality improvement project was entitled “Development of a Systematic Process to Assess and Improve the Quality of Care for Adult Patients Undergoing Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)." This project focused on developing a relational database of patient and treatment characteristics related to ECMO therapy and the associations of those characteristics with outcomes related to ECMO therapy. My interest is to continue to evaluate outcomes of ECMO therapy, particularly in the population of adults with acute respiratory failure and adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
Clinical Emphasis
I maintain an active clinical faculty practice as an acute care nurse practitioner with the Department of Critical Care Medicine, working in the Surgical ICU at UPMC Presbyterian. My clinical interests include cardiovascular, thoracic and surgical critical care; heart and lung transplantation; acute respiratory failure and the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support in that population; and the clinical application of ultrasound for diagnostic and procedural guidance in critically ill patients.
Teaching
I am a clinical faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh and currently teach graduate level didactic and clinical courses in the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner area of concentration. I am the primary teacher for NURNP 2102: Management of Complex Health Problems of the Acutely and Critically Ill Adult 2, and NURNP 2106: Clinical Emphasis, Critical Care. I also teach in the laboratory component of NUR 2031: Diagnostic Physical Examination across the Lifespan, and facilitate clinical rounding groups in NUR 2032: Differential Diagnosis-Clinical. I provide oversight to ACNP students doing clinical rotations as part of NURNP 2101: Management of Adult Episodic/Chronic Health Problems in Acute Care-Clinical, and NURNP 2028/3038: Nurse Practitioner Role Practicum.
Service
I have over 30 years of experience in critical care nursing, including roles as a staff nurse, clinical educator, and clinical nurse manager (PACU/Surgical ICU 1987-1991; and Cardiothoracic ICU 1991-1993) before focusing my career as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP). I spent 4½ years as an ACNP with the inpatient Cardiology service at UPMC Presbyterian, and the last 14 years as an acute care nurse practitioner with the Department of Critical Care Medicine at UPMC, doing clinical practice in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (1999-2012), and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (2012 to present).
I am a member of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (local and national), the Society of Critical Care Medicine, International Transplant Nurses Society (local and international), the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau. Within the School of Nursing, I am a member of DNP Council. I currently serve as an appointed member of the UPMC Health System Office of Advanced Practice Providers Clinical Career Ladder Governing Council. I am honored to have been the recipient of the 2010 Cameos of Caring award for Advanced Practice Nurse.
