About the Lecture: The Florence Erickson and Reva Rubin Lecture honors two prominent professors of the graduate nursing program on their retirement from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. This endowed lecture will provide an overview of the current state of simulation in nursing education and the importance of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™ in experiential learning. It will also explore the educational needs of 21st-century students and the impacts of brain-based learning. Future frontiers and possibilities will be examined through a showcase of emerging technologies.

About the Speakers

Tonya Schneidereith, PhD, MBA, CRNP, PPCNP-BC, CPNP-AC, CNE, CHSE-A, ANEF, FSSH, FAAN

Dr. Tonya Schneidereith is a nurse educator, leader, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience in health care and academic settings. As an entrepreneur and chief executive officer of SIMPL Simulation, LLC, Dr. Schneidereith advances the SIMPL mission of improving health care quality through simulation-based educational experiences. Prior to joining SIMPL full-time, she was an associate professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and a dedicated simulation educator in the prestigious Debra L. Spunt Clinical Simulation Labs. There, she emphasized the role of patient safety for prelicensure and advanced practice nursing students through simulation-based education. She is recognized as an Advanced Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. She holds fellowships in the Academy of Nursing Education, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare Academy, and the American Academy of Nursing.

Crystel Farina, PhD, MSN, RN, CNE, CHSE

Dr. Crystel Farina joined George Washington University School of Nursing in August 2017 as director of simulation and experiential learning. She now serves as an assistant professor and associate dean for BSN programs. She is a Certified Nurse Educator and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator. She completed the NLN Leadership for Simulation Educators program with the 2015 cohort and offers consultation services in simulation center design. Dr. Farina previously held the role of director of simulation for health professions at Chesapeake College, where she taught in the simulation lab for nursing and collaborated with health professions programs to support simulation in EMS, Surgical Technology, and Radiologic Sciences.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

• Articulate the importance of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice™ in experiential learning
• Discuss the brain-based educational needs of 21st-century students and the application of experiential learning
• Review the impacts of experiential learning on student education and the nursing profession
• Examine new simulation technologies in nursing education

Outcome: 80% of participants will report that this session provides information that enhances, validates, or causes a change in practice.

Continuing Education: Nurses participating in the entire educational activity and submit an evaluation may be awarded a maximum of 1.5 NCPD contact hours.
