Internal Transfer Applicant Information

This information is for undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh and are hoping to transfer to the School of Nursing. The curriculum for the undergraduate program in the School of Nursing leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree and eligibility to take the state-licensing exam to become a registered nurse (RN). The program requires 124 credits for graduation.

Admission

Admission to the School of Nursing is very competitive. If a transfer student has less than twenty-four (24) college credits at the time of application, admission will be based in part on the college academic record and on the high school academic record. If a transfer student has more than twenty-four (24) college credits at the time of application, admission will be based on the college record. All applications will be reviewed and decisions will be made based on the student’s academic success and consideration of the number of seats available in the class. Applicants must have at least a 3.3 QPA in order for their application to be considered.

If you wish to apply to the School of Nursing, complete an Undergraduate Academic Program Change form in the school or at the regional campus in which you are currently enrolled and the attached School of Nursing Internal Transfer Applicant Information Form. Then have these forms and your student record sent together to the School of Nursing. For spring term applicants (freshmen admission only), application deadline is November 15. In addition, your fall term grades will need to be given to the School of Nursing before a decision can be made. For fall term applicants (for both freshmen and sophomore status) application acceptance is on a rolling basis based on available seats. Current academic records must be submitted with your file. All materials must be sent to address below.

Reduced Credit Load

If admitted as a first year student (or freshman), it will usually take four (4) additional years to complete the nursing program. You can begin to fulfill the liberal arts and the elective requirements while in CAS/CGS or at a regional campus, thereby reducing the credit load for some terms. General Writing, Psychology, Sociology, Culture (Anthropology, History, etc.), Public Speaking, Statistics, Creative Expression and/or general electives are recommended courses. Please keep in mind that if you take the sophomore nursing pre-requisites such as Chemistry 0910, Anatomy and Physiology (NUR 0012/0013 and Nur 0002/0003), Life Span Development (Psyed 0005), and Microbiology (DSMIC 0031 and 0032) and get admitted as a freshmen, you may need to take additional courses that are not required if you need to be a full-time student. This is where you may consider a minor or certificate program as well. Special permission is required from the instructors of several of these courses, specifically Chemistry, Microbiology, and Anatomy and Physiology lab. Only a limited number of non-nursing seats are available in these classes so it is important to register early.

Once these spaces are filled, please contact the faculty teaching the course about the possibility of getting into the course.

Chemistry Course

All transfer applicants must have successfully completed a general chemistry course with a lab at either the high school or college level.

Sophomore Admission

A limited number of spaces are available at the sophomore level for transfer students. Students interested in these spaces must have completed at least 24 credits prior to enrollment. The following courses must be included in these credits:

Anatomy and Physiology (lecture and lab)
(NUR 0012/0013 and NUR 0002/0003)

8 credits
Chemistry (CHEM 0910) 4 credits
Microbiology (ORBIOL 0031, 0032) 4 credits
Life Span Development (PSYED 0005) 3 credits
*Introduction to Professional Nursing
      (NUR 0051)
3 credits

These courses (with the exception of Introduction to Professional Nursing) can be taken at other colleges or universities. A list of equivalent courses offered at local or regional institutions is attached. Course descriptions for courses not on the list can be submitted to Student Services, School of Nursing, University of Pittsburgh, 239 Victoria Building, Pittsburgh, PA 15261. Fax number: 412-624-2409.

Please keep in mind that you are not guaranteed admission based on the appropriate credits that you bring in. Sophomore seats vary from year to year and admission to a sophomore seat is based not just on the completion of the courses above, but also on your academic record.

*In addition, students accepted for Sophomore status must have completed Introduction to Professional Nursing (Nur 0051), offered only in spring, or Introduction to Nursing Science (Nur 1070), a course taught through External Studies (which must be taken for three (3) credits) at the University of Pittsburgh during the summer prior to the Sophomore year. Nur 1070 meets only 3 Saturdays in the summer, beginning in May. It is strongly encouraged that you make an appointment with the Associate Director of Student Services, Undergraduate Programs to make these class arrangements early since class begins in early May.
