Research

My research activities center around thermoregulation and the inflammatory response. Specific studies include: evaluation of responses to various treatments of fever in critically ill patients, description of core and brain temperatures in head injured patients, and comparison of various methods of measuring temperature in the critically ill. Most recently, I was funded to conduct a genetic study of the relationships between mu receptor genotype and post-operative pain response following anesthesia.

Teaching

I have been on faculty since 1993. During that time I have taught a variety of courses. At the undergraduate level I have taught clinical practicums for sophomore and senior level students. I have also taught undergraduate pathophysiology since 1994 and I have taught Applied Pathophysiology for the RN-Options students. At the masters level I have taught Advanced Pathophysiology since 1994 and I have been involved in research practicums with students on projects associated with thermoregulation. At the doctoral level I have taught the Research Emphasis Seminar on Critical Care Topics and have been on a number of dissertation committees. I have taught pathophysiology via distance education to the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown since 1995. More recently I have been involved in teaching anesthesia students in the human simulation laboratory and as a Nurse Anesthetist preceptor at UPMC-Presbyterian.

Service

I am a member of various School and University Committees. I am a reviewer for Critical Care Nurse, Heart & Lung and the American Journal of Critical Care. I am currently the Vice-Chair of the Acute/Tertiary Care Department and the Assistant Coordinator of the Clinical Nurse Specialist Area of Concentration.

Clinical

Currently I conduct my faculty practice at UPMC-Presbyterian as a Nurse Anesthetist.
