Research

As Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program, my scholarly interests include education and simulation training, as well as anesthesia. One of my current interests is to work to shift the paradigm of training for intravenous catheter insertion from the apprenticeship model to the simulation model. If the simulation model is effective, this type of training could impact the method of instruction for intravenous catheter insertion across all nursing disciplines, reducing potential patient discomfort, the incidence of practitioner injury and/or exposure to blood born pathogens.

Teaching

As Director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program I lecture in all NURSAN courses. I am also a national and international speaker in simulation methodology, distance education, technology, patient safety and nurse anesthesia practice.

Service

I am a retired USAR NC Officer and a blood and bone marrow donor. I also volunteer in a variety of professional organizations. I serve on the Board of Director of the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Avonworth Football Booster, and for the Board of Directors, WISER.

Clinical

I am currently Director of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Nurse Anesthesia Program. I have been active in human simulation education since 1994 and I am the Associate Director for Nursing Simulation at the Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research or WISER. In addition I am a doctoral candidate in Epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
