Nursing Research Minor
Program Description
The minor in Nursing Research is available to students pursuing education in advanced clinical specialty roles the opportunity to also obtain training pertinent to the coordination and conduct of clinical research. The minor will enable graduates to apply their clinical and research skills in the following types of positions: clinical trial interventionists, research consultants, adverse events managers, data collection and research project managers. The minor involves the completion of a minimum of 12 credits of coursework focusing on research methodology and statistics. The student who completes the nursing research minor will be able to achieve the following competencies:
- Apply research principles to the management of clinical investigations.
- Participate in the research process including the development of reviews of literature, research protocols, and human subjects protection protocols.
- Participate in recruitment of research subjects, data collection, and dissemination of research findings.
- Utilize computer technology and informatics as an integral component of a research program or project.
- Articulate the role of the clinical researcher within the health professions and society.
- Perform the role of nurse researcher within clinical research settings.
Course Requirements
PSYED 2018 Statistics l: Descriptive and Inferential Statistics (3 cr.) Introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include frequency distributions, graphs, stem-and-leaf displays, boxplots, scatter diagrams, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, correlation, sampling distributions, point estimation, introduction to hypothesis testing, introduction to interval estimation, chi-square analysis, one-sample and two-sample tests of hypothesis for means, variances, proportions, and correlation coefficients. SPSS for Windows will be used.
- NURSP 2075: Introduction to Health Informatics (3 credits)
- NUR 2030: Professional Communications (2 credits)
- Prerequisites: NUR 2000
- NUR 2800: Coordinating Clinical Trials (2 credits)
- Prerequisites: NUR 2000
A research elective from course offerings outside of the School of Nursing(2 credits). Example electives may include additional training in statistics, independent study, or epidemiology.
In addition to the above courses, the student must write a scholarly research paper, overseen by the Coordinator of the Nursing Research Advanced Roles Specialty Program.
