Nursing Alumni Sponsored Awards
Our alumni represent the University of Pittsburgh locally, nationally and internationally through their work as nursing professionals. The School takes pride in the prestigious accomplishments of its alumni and therefore selects one or more Distinguished Alumni and Honorary Alumni awardees annually. These awards are formally presented at Nursing Alumni Day in the Spring.
Distinguished Alumni Award
Nominees for the Distinguished Alumni Award must be a University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing program graduate and are considered on the basis of leadership, achievement and contribution in areas similar to the following: academia, administration, clinical practice, research and service (professional and community.)
Distinguished Alumni Award nominations should indicate in which of the areas nominees should be considered.
Honorary Alumni Award
This award recognizes an individual who is not a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, but who has demonstrated extraordinary service and support to and for the School’s mission.
Nomination packets for both the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Honorary Alumni Award should include any materials (such as curriculum vitae or resume) and information that supports that nomination (i.e. letters of support, pertinent materials that enhance CV items.)
Distinguished and Honorary Alumni nominations should be submitted to the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing Alumni Office; 218 Victoria Building; 3500 Victoria Street; Pittsburgh, PA 15261.

The Nursing Alumni Society awards the following student scholarships annually at its Alumni Day event in the Spring:
The Nursing Alumni Senior Student Award
This $500 award recognizes a senior nursing student’s excellence in scholastic, professional and personal achievement.
Award Criteria:
- Applicant must have at least a cumulative 3.25 QPA
- Complete an application form (available in the Alumni Office, Room 217)
- Secure two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty
- Submit a 300-500 word essay describing an accomplishment that best illustrates student strengths and how student plans to contribute to the nursing profession
The Nursing Alumni Society Executive Board personally interviews finalists for this award.
The Nursing Alumni Society RN- Options Student Award
Established in 2002, this $500 award recognizes an RN-Options student’s excellence in scholastic, professional and personal achievement.
Award Criteria:
- Applicant must have earned 20 or more credits and have a cumulative 3.5 QPA
- Complete an application form (Available in the Alumni Office, Room 217)
- Secure two letters of recommendation from nursing faculty
- Submit a 300-500 word essay describing how you, as a professional nurse, have made a difference in a patient’s life and/or the nursing profession
The Nursing Alumni Society Executive Board personally interviews finalists for this award.
The African American Nursing Alumni Scholarship
This award provides a cash award for a qualified student who has attained sufficient academic standing
Award Criteria:
- Applicant must be a full-time generic student who will be a junior or senior in the next academic year at the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing and have a minimum 2.5 QPA
- Provide evidence of financial need
- Demonstrates a commitment to nursing and motivation to become a leader in the profession
- Unanimously chosen following a personal interview by the Selection Committee
